The plane ran off the end of the runway and burst into flames. Two flight attendants seated in the back of the cabin survived the crash and fire. A third flight attendant survived the disaster but later died in hospital. Andy Warhol painted his first 'disaster painting', '129 Die in Jet!' based on the 4 June 1962 cover of the New York Mirror, the day after the crash. At that time, the death count was 129.

Solanas fired three times. She missed twice, but the third shot went through Warhol's both lungs, his spleen, stomach, liver, and esophagus. She then shot art critic Mario Amaya in the hip. She tried to shoot Warhol's manager Fred Hughes in the head but her gun jammed. "I consider that a moral act. And I consider it immoral that I missed. I should have done target practice."
