(-) 143 years ago Friday 30th of June 1882 Writer, lawyer and assassin Charles Julius Guiteau known for the killing of President James A. Garfield is executed by hanging at the age of 41 in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. Guiteau notoriously danced his way to the gallows and shook hands with his executioner. On the scaffold, as a last request, he recited a poem called "I am Going to the Lordy" which he had written during his incarceration. He had originally requested an orchestra to play as he sang his poem but this request was denied.

The fire began when cotton bales stored on NDL's southernmost wharf caught fire, and winds carried the flames to nearby barrels of volatile liquids, such as turpentine and oil, which exploded in rapid succession.

(x) 59 years ago He Could Do Nothing but Crouch Down Thursday 30th of June 1966 After a fire at the home of one of his bosses, the bodies of the executive, his wife, and two children were found all stabbed to death, presumed by 30-year-old Boxer and presumed mass murderer Iwao Hakamada in Yūtō, Shizuoka, Japan. Hakamada was interrogated and in August 1966 he was arrested based on his confession and a tiny amount of blood and gasoline found on a pair of pajamas he owned. According to his lawyers, Hakamada was interrogated a total of 264 hours for as many as 16 hours a session over 23 days to obtain the confession. They added that he was denied water or toilet breaks during the interrogation. "I could do nothing but crouch down on the floor trying to keep from defe cating," Hakamada later told his sister.

The three crew members of Soyuz 11 are the only humans known to have died in space.

Chenault shot King with two pistols as she sat at the organ of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Chenault stated that he shot King because "all Christians are my enemies" and claimed that he had decided that black ministers were a menace to black people.

(x) 28 years ago He Took Her to Buy an Axe Monday 30th of June 1997 17-year-old Mass murderer Joshua Jenkins aka The Teenage Annihilator is sentenced to 112 years to life for killing his adoptive parents George and Alene, grandparents William and Evelyn Grossman and 10-year-old sister Megan on 2/3 February 1996 during a visit to the grandparent's condominium in San Diego, California, United States. After an argument with his mother about sending him to a boarding school Jenkins bludgeoned his parents and grandparents to death with a hammer. Inexplicably, somehow he kept Megan from discovering the carnage. The next morning Jenkins took her with him to buy an axe w hich he used to kill her once they returned to the condo.

(x) 16 years ago Tuesday 30th of June 2009 13-year-old Plane crash survivor Bahia Bakari became the sole survivor of the Yemenia Flight 626 Airbus A310-324 crash in Moroni, Grande Comore, Comoros. Bakari was found clinging to wreckage after floating in the ocean for thirteen hours. 152 people died in the crash.

Hummel stabbed his 34-year-old pregnant wife Joy to death, beat his five-year-old daughter Jodi and his 57-year-old father in law Clyde Bedford to death with a baseball bat in 2009. He then set their home on fire in Kennedale, Fort Worth.
