Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on 2 July. The bullet wound was probed with unwashed fingers by doctors trying to find the bullet.

The church was crowded with approximately 3.000 people to hear Booker T. Washington address the National Convention of Negro Baptists. Someone in the choir yelled "A fight!" Mistaking the word 'fight' for 'fire' the congregation rose en masse and started for the door. Through mere fright many persons fainted and as they fell to the floor were crushed to death.

Seeing the lights of a 4.000 metres long straight highway north of Isparta city, the first officer mistook it for the runway. As the aircraft was at 150 metres the captain returned to the cockpit and became aware of the fact that the aircraft was descending onto a highway with truck traffic on it. He initiated a sudden climb with full power but the heavily loaded aircraft struck the slope of a hill at Karatepe with its right wing and crashed.

Günther carried two 20l milk canisters filled with petrol and poured them over himself before the altar while 300 people were attending mass. He then spread his arms and let the candles ignite his robe. Two more spare canisters exploded as the floor around the altar was covered in flames.

A bomb placed by a rebel Jihad group in a container in location 13-R in the forward cargo hold caused the destruction of the aircraft. In 2007 a memorial was created in the desert by Les Familles de l'Attentat du DC-10 d'UTA, an association of the victims' families. The memorial is constructed of black rock in the shape and dimensions of the DC10 airplane inside a compass, with one of the plane's wings used as a compass point, and over 170 broken mirrors to reflect the victims of the crash.
