(-) 44 years ago Monday 27th of August 1979 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten is killed in a bomb attack on his Shadow V boat by the IRA at the age of 79 in Mullaghmore, Connacht, Ireland. The boat was destroyed by the force of the blast and Mountbatten's legs were almost blown off. Mountbatten was pulled alive from the water by nearby fishermen but died from his injuries before being brought to shore. Also aboard the boat were his elder daughter Patricia aka Lady Brabourne, her husband John aka Lord Brabourne, their twin sons Nicholas and Timothy Knatchbull, John's mother Doreen aka Baroness Brabourne and crew member Paul Maxwell. 14-year-old Nicholas and 15-year-old Paul were killed by the blast and the others were seriously injured. 83-year-old Doreen died from her injuries the following day.
