Black child rapist Elijah Clark is lynched by crowd of approximately 6000 people because he raped 13-year-old Susan Priest in Huntsville, Alabama, United States.

Will Priest, an elder brother of Susie threw the rope over a limb of a tree. After asking if Clark had any last words to say, Priest slapped the horse on its side leaving the accused hanging by the neck. As if hanging itself was not enough the young Priest grabbed a gun and began firing at the dead body swinging softly in the breeze. This served as a signal for others in the mob who immediately began firing their guns also. A witness later reported that over 150 shots were fired at Clark's body within a matter of minutes.

General Philippe Henri Benoni Omer Joseph Pétain dies of natural causes at the age of 95 in Fort de Pierre-Levée, Île d'Yeu, Pays de la Loire, France.

In February 1973 Pétain's coffin was stolen from the Île d'Yeu cemetery by extremists who demanded that President Georges Pompidou consent to his interment in the Douaumont cemetery among the war dead. Authorities retrieved the coffin a few days later and Pétain was ceremoniously reburied with a Presidential wreath on his coffin, but on the Île d'Yeu as before.

Mass murderer Abraham Thomas is executed by hanging at the age of 28 in United States Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, United States.

On 23 February 1954 Thomas shot and killed 28-year-old sergeant Lafayette Bennett, 32-year-old corporal Edward Peters and their German girlfriends Walburga Wenderoth and Anna Weigel in Gersthofen, Germany. Then Thomas used an axe to bludgeon, hack and mutilate the bodies.

48-year-old Mass murderer James Urban Ruppert has a review of his trial in Findlay, Ohio, United States.

A 3-judge panel found Ruppert guilty of first degree murder in the case of his mother and brother but this time, they found him not guilty on the other 9 counts of murder by reason of insanity. He received life sentences for each of the two charges to be served consecutively rather than concurrently.

Florence Tisdall is sexually assaulted and strangled by serial killer Kenneth Erskine aka The Stockwell Strangler in Ranelagh Gardens, Fulham, London, Greater London, United Kingdom.

Tisdall was partly deaf and blind and could only move around with the aid of a walking frame. On this day she had managed a rare trip out to have her hair done especially for the occasion of the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York which was being broadcast on television that day. She was Erskine's last victim.

27-year-old Serial killer, cannibal and necrophile Tsutomu Miyazaki aka The Little Girl Murderer is arrested in Hachioji, Tokyo, Kantō, Japan.

Miyazaki attempted to insert a zoom lens into the vagina of a grade school–aged girl in a park near her home and was apprehended by the girl's father. After fleeing naked on foot Miyazaki eventually returned to the park to retrieve his Toyota car whereupon he was arrested by police who had responded to a call by the grandfather. A search of Miyazaki's two-room bungalow turned up a collection of 5.763 videotapes, some containing anime and slasher films. Interspersed among them was video footage and pictures of his victims.

Serial killer Andrew Phillip Cunanan aka American Gigolo/American Psycho commits suicide by a shot in the head at the age of 28 in 5250 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida, United States.

Cunanan shot himself in the head with a .40-caliber Taurus PT92 semiautomatic pistol he had stolen from Jeffrey Trail — the same weapon he used to kill David Madson, Lee Miglin, and Gianni Versace.

Hours before his execution O'Dell married law-student Lori Urs aka Lori St John. After his death O'Dell's body was shipped to Palermo, Italy where he was buried as a local hero, presumed innocent.

Double murderer Joseph Rudolph Wood is executed by lethal injection at the age of 56 in Arizona State Prison Complex, 1305 E Butte Avenue, Florence, Arizona, United States.

Wood was executed with a combination of midazolam and hydromorphone. The execution began at 1:52 p.m. and ended at 3:49 p.m. when Wood was pronounced dead. Wood gasped and snorted for well over an hour, and a media witness compared Wood's breathing to a "fish gulping for air". An Associated Press reporter said Wood gasped more than 600 times.
