43-year-old Leader of the Italian National Fascist Party Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini aka Il Duce is hit in the nose by a bullet fired by Violet Gibson in an attempt to kill him in Piazza del Campidoglio, Rome, Lazio, Italy.

Mussolini was wounded only slightly, dismissing his injury as "a mere trifle" and after his nose was bandaged he continued his parade on the Capitoline. It has been theorised that Gibson was insane at the time of the attack and the idea of assassinating Mussolini was hers and that she worked alone.

Formula One racer Jim James Clark crashes his Lotus 48 into a tree in what was to be his last race before retiring on his sheep-farm at the age of 32 in Hockenheimring, Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Clark suffered a broken neck and skull fracture and died before reaching the hospital.

Attorney General of Germany Siegfried Buback is shot dead by the Rote Armee Fraktion, Kommando Ulrike Meinhof at the age of 57 in Linkenheimer Landstraße, Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

RAF members Christian Klar, Knut Folkerts, Günter Sonnenberg and Brigitte Mohnhaupt were formally charged and prosecuted in connection with the Buback murder.

42nd Prime Minister of Iran Amir-Abbas Hoveyda is executed by the firing squad at the age of 60 in Qasr Prison, Tehran, Tehran, Iran.

Hoveyda was sentenced to death for "waging war against God" and "spreading corruption on earth". Before reaching the area designated for firing squad executions Hojatoleslam Hadi Ghaffari pulled out a pistol and shot Hoveyda twice in the neck. He was left on the ground in agony, begging for the executioners to finish him off. Finally his executioners shot him in the head. According to the autopsy report Hoveyda was also beaten shortly before his execution.

Lindsey was the first victim upon whom Dahmer practiced what he later described to investigators as his 'drilling technique', a procedure in which he drilled holes into the victim's skull through which he injected hydrochloric acid into the brain.
