(-) 109 years ago His Diesel Caught Water Monday 29th of September 1913 Inventor and mechanical engineer Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel commits suicide by drowning at the age of 55 in Antwerpen, Antwerpen, Belgium. Diesel boarded the post office steamer Dresden in Antwerpen to London. He took dinner on board the ship and then retired to his cabin leaving word to be called the next morning. He was never seen alive again. In the morning his cabin was empty and his bed had not been slept in. Ten days later the crew of the Dutch boat Coertsen came upon the corpse of a man floating in the North Sea near Norway. Personal belongings were identified by Diesel's son.

(x) 65 years ago Sunday 29th of September 1957 An unknown number die in nuclear waste tanks explosion in Mayak, Ozyorsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. At least 22 villages were exposed to radiation from the disaster, with a total population of around 10.000 people evacuated. Some were evacuated after a week but it took almost 2 years for evacuations to occur at other sites. It was only in 1976 that dissident Zhores Medvedev made the nature and extent of the disaster known to the world. In 1992 a study conducted by the Soviet Institute of Biophysics found that 8.015 people had died within the preceding 32 years as a result of the accident.

His 25-year-old brother Stanley and 19-year-old sister-in-law Theresa later also died after taking Tylenol from the same bottle. Within the next few days 31-year-old Mary McFarland of Elmhurst, 35-year-old Paula Prince and 27-year-old and Mary Reiner all died in similar incidents. In addition to the five bottles that led to the victims' deaths three other contaminated bottles were later discovered. Hundreds of copycat attacks involving Tylenol and other products also took place around the United States immediately following the Chicago deaths.
