31-year-old Business magnate, aviator, aerospace engineer, film director and eccentric Howard Robard Hughes hits and kills pedestrian Gabriel S. Meyer with his car in 3rd Street and Lorraine, Los Angeles, California, United States.

A witness to the accident told police that Hughes was driving erratically and too fast and that Meyer had been standing in the safety zone of a streetcar stop. Hughes was booked on suspicion of negligent homicide and held overnight in jail. On 16 July 1936 Hughes was held blameless by a coroner's jury at the inquest into Meyer's death.

Problems began when a fire started in a rear lavatory. Prior to the forced landing many of the passengers had already died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation. A possible cause of the fire was that the lavatory waste bin contents caught fire after a lit cigarette was thrown into it. There were 11 survivors.
