Lieutenant in the New York City Police Department, racketeer and murderer Charles Becker is executed by Old Sparky at the age of 45 in Sing Sing Prison, Ossining, New York, United States.

Becker's electrocution took nine minutes, causing him intense agony, and was described for years afterward as "the clumsiest execution in the history of Sing Sing."

Entertainer, priest and womanizer Harold Francis Davidson aka The Prostitutes' Padre dies of a broken neck at the age of 62 in Skegness, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom.

Two days earlier he was attacked by a lion during a stage act 'Daniel in a Modern Lion's Den'. Davidson gave his usual speech before entering the cage in which two lions, Freddie and Toto, were sitting quietly. Freddie became agitated and knocked Davidson over before seizing him by the neck and running with him around the cage. 16-year-old tamer Irene Somner struggled to pacify the snarling Freddie who eventually dropped the uncons cious Davidson, enabling her to drag him to safety; he was badly gashed and had suffered a broken bone in his neck.
