(x) 107 years ago Monday 13th of January 1908 171 die in Rhoads Opera House fire in Rhoads Opera House, South Washington Street and East Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, Pennsylvania, United States. Nearly 400 people had packed an opera house to watch or perform in a play called 'The Scottish Reformation'. The fire wiped out about 10 percent of the town population.

To Marchadier, Landru was known as Lucien Guillet. She was his last victim. Her three dogs were found strangled in the garden.

(-) 74 years ago Monday 13th of January 1941 Poet and writer James Augustine Aloysius Joyce dies of a malignal duodenal tumor at the age of 59 in Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland. On 11 January 1941 Joyce underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer. While he at first improved, he relapsed the following day and despite several transfusions fell into a coma. Joyce awoke at 2 a.m. on 13 January and asked for a nurse to call his wife and son before losing consciousness again. They were still on their way when Joyce died 15 minutes later.

The carpet beneath Small's body was scorched but there was no other sign of fire in the house. Small's pipe was unlit and on a shelf and his stove lids were all still in place.

(x) 40 years ago Monday 13th of January 1975 Lesley Whittle is kidnapped and killed by multiple murderer Donald Neilson aka The Black Panther in Beech Croft, Bridgnorth Road, Highley, Shropshire, United Kingdom. Neilson then drove Whittle to Bathpool Park in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire. There he forced her down into the drainage shaft of the nearby reservoir. Inside the shaft he placed a hood over her head, removed the dressing gown leaving her naked and then tethered her to the side of the shaft by a wire noose. There was a mattress and a sleeping bag. On 6 March 1975 police found Whittle's body hanging from a steel wire only 180mm from the bottom of the 6m deep shaft.
