(-) 19 years ago Friday 31st of March 1995 Singer-songwriter Selena Quintanilla-Pérez aka The Queen of Tejano music is shot dead by 35-year-old Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club at the age of 24 in Days Inn Motel, 901 Navigation Blvd, Corpus Christi, Texas, United States. Saldívar was embezzling money from the Selena fan club and Selena decided to fire her. Shot once in her right shoulder, severing an artery, Selena ran towards the lobby for help. She collapsed on the floor as the clerk called 911, with Saldívar still chasing her and calling her a "bitch". Selena died in a hospital from loss of blood. Her funeral drew 60.000 mourners.

On the location where the so-called 'Strangler of the Left Bank' committed a murder, I was hanging upside down between four trees. To my arms and legs I tied small hatchets and I pulled a plastic bag over my head. I hung there as long as I could. The performance was inspired by an ever recurring nightmare by the 'Strangler', with whom I kept an intense correspondence for several years.

The evening of the fire, unemployed Cuban refugee Julio González had argued with his former girlfriend Lydia Feliciano, a coat check girl at the Happy Land, urging her to quit. She claimed that she had had enough of him and did not want anything to do with him anymore. González tried to fight back into the club but was ejected by the bouncer. González returned to the establishment with a plastic container of gasoline. He spread the fuel on a staircase, the only access into the club, and then ignited the gasoline. González was charged with 174 counts of murder - two for each victim - and was found guilty on 87 counts of arson and 87 counts of murder on 19 August 1991. For each count he received the sentence maximum of 25 years to life (a total of 4,350 years).
